The satisfying part
Why is pimple popping so satisfying?
For someone who likes pimple popping, the appeal can last beyond the pop itself: there is something to remove, a moment of resistance, and a visible result. That sequence is central to how we make Pimple Please. It is a design explanation, though, not a proven account of what happens in everyone’s brain.
What has actually been studied?
A 2021 study by Wabnegger and colleagues compared 38 women who enjoyed pimple-popping videos with 42 who reported little enjoyment. Participants watched clips of pimple treatments, fountains and steam cleaning during brain imaging. The groups differed in activity and connectivity involving regions associated with pleasure, aversion and predicting outcomes. Read the study abstract on PubMed.
This was a study of watching videos in a particular sample. It does not establish that popping games reduce anxiety, that everyone finds them relaxing, or that the appeal has one simple cause. We do not treat it as evidence that Pimple Please has a health benefit.
The wait gives the release a shape
In our game, a pore does not disappear the instant you touch it. The skin compresses first. A small whitehead releases fairly quickly; a darker plug takes longer. That gives your hold a beginning and an end you can see.
We keep the action under your control. Lift your finger to pause, then hold again to continue. Once the camera is close, you do not have to chase a tiny moving target. You can hold anywhere on the close-up.
Cleanup is part of the result
A pop with no aftermath feels unfinished to us. Pimple Please leaves the extracted material on the skin until you wipe it away. The napkin picks it up and carries it off the face. The cleared spot remains visible, so you can see what your action changed.

When the last pore is clean, the camera returns to the whole face and the person smiles. There is no separate claim that this is what real treatment looks or feels like. It is how the game acknowledges that you finished helping its character.
Watching and playing ask different things of you
A video chooses the pace for you. In a game, you decide how long to hold and when to wipe. For Pimple Please, that means the sound, the pressure and the material need to follow your gesture. A nice-looking animation alone cannot do all of that work.
You can turn the sound off and still finish every face. If the close-up movement bothers you, Settings has Reduced motion. Neither changes the basic hold-and-wipe sequence.
